Wifi Security

If you’ve recently gone wireless then you were probably pleasantly surprised at how easy it was to setup - in many cases simply plugging the router in and connecting it to your modem is enough to get online. But are you aware of the security concerns? Wireless networking is inherently less secure than traditional wired networks because information is sent through the air. The greatest concern these days isn’t that your information is available for all to see, it’s that a malicious party will take control of your network for his own purposes - either for sending spam or for attacking other sites and making sure you face the consequences not them.

Securing a wireless access point is fairly simple, so make sure you follow the instructions that came with your device. Use passwords that you can remember but that would not be easy to guess. Take the time to get to know how to use the device, since many offer simple options to add security or to access logs of possible malicious activity. If you’re still concerned you can contact us for more information.

  1. Also make sure to use the newer WPA/WPA-2 Encryption instead of the older WEP encryption.

  2. Don’t forget to read the manual BEFORE setting up your device - mostly the quick-start process will cover the basics!

  3. I agree with the suggestion of using WPA/WPA-2 encryption. Additionally, change the SSID to a name that does not identify you, your equipment or location.
Use a WPA or WPA2 passphrase with at least 24 characters or the full 63 or 64 string.
