Determine The Needs
Knowing your weaknesses is the first step to increasing security within your organization.
- What are the possible failure scenarios?
- What is the critical data?
- How often should backups be performed?
- When should a FULL backup versus an Incremental or Differential Backup be performed?
- Should backups be performed on-line while users are working, or off-line?
- Will backups be done manually or via an automatic scheduling process?
- How can you verify that a backup was successfully performed?
- How will you determine if the backups are useable?
- How long will you save backups before reusing the medium?
- How much time will it take to restore from the last back up?
- Where will your backup media be stored?
- Do appropriate personnel have access to backup media for restores?
- If the IT System Administrator is not available, who has access to passwords and backup media?
- What is your plan if your servers are stolen or physically damaged?
- Do you have a Disaster Recovery policy that incorporates all of the above recommendations?
Disaster Planning
Is your data secure?
Do you have a Disaster Recovery Plan?
In today's globally connected world, customers, partners and mobile workers need access to data and applications. Proactive measures are needed to ensure the resiliency of a business' underlying network infrastructure to provide near-immediate service recovery for mission-critical applications.
As a CIO, CEO or IT manager, it is your responsibility to insure that proper resources to disaster planning has been allocated. You should have a clear plan to follow in case of partial or complete system failure.
Disaster Planning Includes:
- Backup procedures
- Offsite storage
- Offsite data centers
- Remote Hot servers
- Remote standby servers
- Testing procedures of all live, hot and standby systems
- Written procedures and staff training

A Disaster Recovery Plan usually cannot be written by the IT Department alone and requires the expertise of experienced Security Analysts. Typically, effective Disaster Recovery plans are a long-term project that involves management, IT staff and Security Analysts.
