Determine The Needs

Knowing your weaknesses is the first step to increasing security within your organization.

  1. What are the possible failure scenarios?
  2. What is the critical data?
  3. How often should backups be performed?
  4. When should a FULL backup versus an Incremental or Differential Backup be performed?
  5. Should backups be performed on-line while users are working, or off-line?
  6. Will backups be done manually or via an automatic scheduling process?
  7. How can you verify that a backup was successfully performed?
  8. How will you determine if the backups are useable?
  9. How long will you save backups before reusing the medium?
  10. How much time will it take to restore from the last back up?
  11. Where will your backup media be stored?
  12. Do appropriate personnel have access to backup media for restores?
  13. If the IT System Administrator is not available, who has access to passwords and backup media?
  14. What is your plan if your servers are stolen or physically damaged?
  15. Do you have a Disaster Recovery policy that incorporates all of the above recommendations?

Do you have a Disaster Recovery Plan?

In today's globally connected world, customers, partners and mobile workers need access to data and applications. Proactive measures are needed to ensure the resiliency of a business' underlying network infrastructure to provide near-immediate service recovery for mission-critical applications.

As a CIO, CEO or IT manager, it is your responsibility to insure that proper resources to disaster planning has been allocated. You should have a clear plan to follow in case of partial or complete system failure.

Disaster Planning Includes:

  1. Backup procedures
  2. Offsite storage
  3. Offsite data centers
  4. Remote Hot servers
  5. Remote standby servers
  6. Testing procedures of all live, hot and standby systems
  7. Written procedures and staff training

A Disaster Recovery Plan usually cannot be written by the IT Department alone and requires the expertise of experienced Security Analysts. Typically, effective Disaster Recovery plans are a long-term project that involves management, IT staff and Security Analysts.
