John Martel Great Bear Rainforest
Great Bear Rainforest Rainbow After The Storm

Starting Price $50.00 | Canvas Print 50 cm x 39 cm

This photograph was taken from a sailboat, during one of our many Great Bear Rainforest explorations, one can see the seagulls grouped for safety on the lee side of the storm, of which you can see the remnants (dark clouds) in the top left; the sun is shining through to the shoreline on the bottom right, and also through the rainforest mist, creating the rainbow. Even though the rainbow was fading, I waited for the lonely seagull still in the air to show up under the rainbow before taking the photo.

We had been on the same shore the previous evening and decided to return very early in the morning. We ended up sitting on the beach at the point where the penguins, having marched along the sea, went just past us and dove into the sea. One can see the various groups winding their way among the Southern Fur seal moles who were busy setting up their harem locations on the shore. In the foreground, one can see a female who had just calve her cub (the black fur at the feet of the penguin on the left. The setting was spectacular.

At midnight, we were standing on the outer deck of a converted icebreaker, leaving the Canadian shoreline,  heading east towards Greenland. Looking back, one could see the artistic configuration of the wake. I waited until a seagull appeared in the photo. This photo was used at the bedside of a cancer patient, who said that looking at it provided her with a sense of serenity.

John Martel & Kathy McGuire

Nature & Wildlife Photographer | Artist

John Martel and his wife Kathy McGuire have traveled extensively and enjoyed the entire coastline of Canada via water as much as possible, closing the loop in 2009 by exploring the fabled North West Passage.

They explored the coast of British Columbia and Haida Gwai (formerly the Queen Charlotte Islands) in a sailboat, spent time in the Great Bear Rain Forest (home of the Spirit Bear), and organized extensive photography trips in a grizzly Bear preserve, the Khusteymateen Valley.

They have visited most Arctic communities and, more recently, John even spent three months in the Antarctic photographing penguins and seals, and swimming with whales on the Silver Banks (an area where humpback whales gather to socialize and bear their young).

Their passion for the wild developed over many years, augmented by John’s burgeoning interest in photography in the early 1990s.

John’s main interest quickly became close-up photography, carried out in a non-intrusive way that is respectful of the animals in their environment.

He supports many conservation groups, most notably Pacific Wild and the Nature Conservancy of Canada, doing his part to protect natural habitats for future generations.

His photos reflect his passion and respect for nature and its wildlife, values he learned at a young age when he spent most of his summers in and around Algonquin Park. Over time, with the help of experienced locals, he mastered outdoor skills such as fishing, canoeing, camping, tracking, and observing wildlife. All these skills and interests helped him in his role as a teacher, and to this day he’s proud to have set up an outdoor education program at St. Clair College in the mid-1970s.
