In this month’s employee feature, I sit down with Carl Magee. Carl is a Technical Specialist at AlphaKOR and has been a valuable member of our team for about one year. What drew you to the Technical Specialist position?
I was drawn to the Technical Specialist role at AlphaKOR because I very much enjoy the challenge of solving problems. Being able to work with a great team of people within the IT industry also keeps me learning many new things on a regular basis which I enjoy!
What educational background did you need to secure this role?
Prior to securing this role, I completed a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science.
What does the average day look like for you as a Technical Specialist?
The average day for me as a Technical Specialist typically involves:
- answering phone calls to assist clients with technical issues;
- monitoring my email inbox;
- creating service tickets; and
- contacting clients to assist them with their needs.
Did you work in the IT industry prior to working at AlphaKOR?
Prior to working at AlphaKOR, I worked at a service desk where I had a similar role in assisting clients with technical issues; although, it was in a much more limited capacity compared to what I am able to do now.
What is it like working for a Managed Service Provider (MSP)?
Working for an MSP is great! I enjoy the fast-paced environment where I get to learn many new things on a regular basis and work with plenty of people.
How do you manage your time working for multiple clients?
To manage my time working for multiple clients, I generally stay organized by taking notes while assisting clients. My notes help me organize the tasks I am doing as I progress through various projects.
What skillset is critical to your role as a Technical Specialist?
As a Technical Specialist, I would say that problem solving and being able to do research are critical skills to have.
What key qualities do you think a good Technical Specialist possesses?
I believe patience, having an eye for detail, and being a good communicator are some key qualities of a Technical Specialist.
What is the most exciting part about your job?
The most exciting part of my job is when I am faced with a problem I have never seen before. The satisfaction of being able to help a client with their issue is a great feeling!
What is the least exciting part of your job?
The least exciting part of my job would be note-taking, although it helps me stay organized which is essential!
How do you hope to grow in your field of work?
I hope to one day be able to move up to being an on-site technician and expand my knowledge in networking equipment.
What have you learned at AlphaKOR that has helped you grow personally?
At AlphaKOR, I have learned to not be afraid to ask questions if I am having difficulties. You can’t know everything, and being able to ask questions is the first step in helping yourself grow.
For someone who would like to obtain a position as a Technical Specialist, what advice would you give to them?
I think the best advice I could give someone is not to forget the little things when helping someone. Sometimes the solution isn’t the complex puzzle you may have thought, and instead, it may have been a simple setting change or a restart.
