World Backup Day is something we take rather seriously here at Veeam, and so should you. We’re going to hold a LinkedIn Live Event on March 31 that will highlight an entire career of backup advice into a succinct 30-minute session. Don’t forget to register here, we have some sweet prizes for you!

While I’ve got some tricks up my sleeve planned for the broadcast event (including special guest Didier Van Hoye), I want to share some key tips here.

Backup tips and best practice

The most important thing to remember about backups for 2021 is the numbers. I have taken a fancy to the 3-2-1-1-0 Rule, and that’s a number for you to start with.

The 3-2-1-1-0 Rule is a more modern twist on the 3-2-1 Rule. Veeam’s interpretation of this rule states that you should have:

  • 3 Different copies of data (at least) on
  • 2 Different media (or more) with
  • 1 Offsite copy and
  • 1 of which is either air-gapped, immutable or offline and have
  • 0 recovery errors with SureBackup recover verification

One of the most beautiful parts of the 3-2-1-1-0 Rule is that it doesn’t require any specific technology yet can address nearly any failure scenario. The reality is, however, that good thought should go into how the 3-2-1-1-0 Rule is implemented. It’s also completely normal to have more than 3 copies. I’m a 4 or 5 copy type of guy myself.

Immutable backup data types

One area to consider, more important than ever today, is the air-gapped, immutable or offline copy of data. It is also possible to have more than one immutable backup type. In fact, there are very compelling options to build Veeam Scale-out Backup Repositories with the new Hardened Linux Repository and concurrently sending backup data to the Capacity Tier with copy mode to an immutable cloud target. Double immutability anyone!?!

Other established types such as tape, offline media Cloud Connect with Insider Protection and other media are additional ways to get that air-gap or offline box ticked for the 3-2-1-1-0 Rule.

Best practices for recovery

Data recovery is why we are in the business of doing backups. Having the right way to recover data from a backup is very important. You don’t want to restore too much and even more so you don’t want to restore too little. The latest release of Veeam Availability Suite has 91 recovery scenarios!
