Ransomware Innovates by Hiding in File-upload Websites

FIU Cybersecurity researchers conducted a thorough analysis, uncovering a concerning trend: specific websites lure users into granting file access, then deploy ransomware payloads. Popular platforms such as tax estimation websites, photo editors, and movie streaming services commonly seek permission to access user media. However, once granted, they may seize control over the content. This infiltration extends to well-known cloud storage services like Google Drive, OneDrive, Dropbox, Apple Cloud, and BOX. Only two steps are required for a malicious website to launch its attack: A user must consent by clicking ‘yes’ on a pop-up requesting access to their files, such as ‘Allow this website to access your photos?’ Second step, they need to click ‘yes’ on a second pop-up, disguised as a harmless message like an ad or a request such as ‘May we close the rest of your tabs for you?’ Falling for these two pop-ups is all too simple.
