IT Professionals work hard to secure and maintain the integrity of your business. Your business relies on IT infrastructure to support daily operational tasks such as creating and storing corporate data, interacting with clients, and collaborating with colleagues. As with any technology, your IT infrastructure must be maintained or problems can arise that could negatively impact how your business operates. IT Professionals are like the superheroes of the computer world, solving problems on the fly! At AlphaKOR, a Technical Specialist does just that.

In this month’s employee feature, I sit down with Kevin Peixe. Kevin is a Technical Specialist at AlphaKOR and has been a member of our team for almost three years! In this interview, we gain career insight into what the average day of a Technical Specialist looks like, Kevin’s personal experiences on the job, and advice for those looking to obtain a career as a Technical Specialist.

Meet Kevin!

Kevin Peixe Technical Specialist

What drew you to the Technical Specialist position?

I was looking for an IT job since I graduated from college. I was comfortable at my previous job but wanted a change from the retail and sales environment. So, I received my A+ certificate, applied to AlphaKOR and was offered this job starting as a support technician before moving to my now on-site technician role.

What educational background did you need to secure this role?

When I applied, the job did require some post-secondary education in computers and networking.

What does the average day look like for you in your role?

The average day consists of checking emails for client questions and concerns, looking to support for any tickets that need to be taken care of, completing assigned on-site/remote work given to me by support. This can be anything from computer installs to emergency network outages.

Did you work in IT prior to working at AlphaKOR?

No, I did not have any IT experience other than my personal family computer troubles.

What is it like working for a Managed Service Provider (MSP)?

This is no ordinary Managed Service Provider. This is AlphaKOR. It is fun with the team that I am a part of. Everyone is so helpful, and it makes me feel good knowing there is always someone that can help if needed. Sometimes the job can be a little hectic, but the team has a good handle on things.

How do you manage your time working for multiple clients?

Scheduling, scheduling, scheduling! I try to complete the job as quickly and professionally so that I have enough time to prepare for my next client.

What skillset is critical to your job as a Technical Specialist?

It is critical to know how to hook up computers and networking equipment. As an on-site tech, this is a must as we do a lot of this type of work. Also, not being afraid to offer your input. Customers are looking to you for advice on what they need in their environment.

What key qualities do you think a good Technical Specialist possesses?

I think a good Technical Specialist should have:

  • Knowledge of the job;
  • Is teamwork focused, and;
  • Ability to solve problems on the fly.

What is the most exciting part of your job?

Going home at 5! No, for real though, it’s interacting with our customers and our internal staff.

What is the least exciting part of your job?

After-hours work. Sometimes it is required to work more than your standard 8 hours per day and sometimes having to work overnight during non-production hours. We still need to do it though!

How do you hope to grow in your field of work?

With the team that I have, there are so many directions that I could go, but I hope that one day, hopefully soon I can become a Networking Technician or a Network Administrator.

What have you learned at AlphaKOR that has helped you grow personally?

To not be afraid to try new things. It is always daunting to switch to a new job or role but AlphaKOR has made it easier for me to transition to an on-site technician. We have a good group of people here!

For someone who would like to obtain a position as a Technical Specialist, what advice would you give to them?

IT work is not as difficult as some of the training courses can make it out to be. It can be a fun and rewarding field of work, but it can be physically demanding at times. Be prepared for that part!
