SPACEX STARSHIP TEST LAUNCH

WHY WAS IT A SUCCESSFUL FAILURE?

On April 20th , 2023 at 9:33 AM in Boca Chica, Texas a.k.a. Starbase. SpaceX launched its Super Heavy rocket, Starship, equipped with 33 Raptor engines capable of 230tf (ton-force) thrust each. Starship was created by SpaceX to be a reusable rocket for space missions with NASA like the Artemis Mission, payload delivery, and future space travel to the Moon and beyond.

The test flight on April 20th was the first test flight for Starship. The objective was to get the rocket off the launchpad, test the section separation and haul stresses, low Earth orbit and return to Earth, a short 90 minute test. However, the steps after liftoff didn’t happen. Here’s a breakdown of what happened and why it was considered a failed success.

Starship’s heavy rocket started its 33 Raptor engines but liftoff took longer than usual, 10 seconds longer, destroying the launchpad and sending cement flying hundreds of feet in the air. Once the rocket was in the air, it lost 5 of its 33 engines making the rocket unstable and unable to steer. As Starship tumbled in the air, a command was sent from Control to detonate the rocket as it threatened those on the ground. With the destruction of the launchpad and Starship, the FAA has launched an investigation into the failed test.

NEW FUNDING FOR ACCESSIBLE TECH

THE ACCESSIBLE TECHNOLOGY PROGRAM GETS GOVERNMENT FUNDING

In today’s digital economy, many Canadians experience barriers to accessibility and inclusion with technology, the Government of Canada is working to break those barriers by finding new and innovative ways with the Accessible Technology Program. The Program was announced on May 4th by the Honourable François-Philippe Champagne, Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry, 11 organizations across Canada will get a portion of the $5.8 million investment in the second phase of the program.

With the changes to technology constantly changing and becoming readily available, their prices go down. The same can’t be said about assistive and/or adaptive devices because of their customization for each individual’s need. The program will help with that by advancing the development of accessible technologies and will ensure that Canadians with disabilities can be more independent.
